Alfie Boe Biography: Early Life and Education

Alfie Boe whose real name is Alfred Giovanni Roncalli Boe was born on 29 September 1973. Alfie Boe early life started in the town of Fleetwood, which is close to Blackpool, Lancashire. He was the youngest of nine children. He was born in Norway to Irish parents, Alf Boe and Pat Boe. The Italian name of Pope John XXIII inspired his parents to name their son after him. He is a graduate of Fleetwood’s Cardinal Allen Catholic High School and St. Wulstan’s and St. Edmund’s. As a child, he first heard Puccini’s La bohème while listening to recordings of Richard Tauber that belonged to his father.

Alfie Boe made his public debut in a “Songs from the Shows” event at Fleetwood’s Marine Hall when he was fourteen years old, hosted by Lottie Dawson, a singing instructor in that field.

Boe started working as an apprentice mechanic at the TVR plant in Bispham, Blackpool when he was seventeen years old. As he cleaned the vehicles, Boe would often sing opera arias to delight his coworkers. One day, a customer with ties in the music world overheard him and was so pleased that he recommended Boe try out for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in London. After a successful audition, he decided to leave his job as a car polisher to pursue a singing career. Sadly, Boe misplaced the client’s business card and lost the means of contacting the client who recommended he try out for the audition.

Career Journey

After relocating to London, Boe enrolled in vocal programs at prestigious institutions like the Royal College of Music, the National Opera Studio, and the Vilar Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House. Recordings by the Clint Boon Experience—led by the former Inspiral Carpets organist—featured him as the “opera dude” in 1999 and 2000. While touring Scotland in 1999 with the Scottish Opera’s Opera-Go-Round production of Don Pasquale, he performed the role of Ernesto.
