Ruth Negga was born in 1981 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to parents of Irish and Ethiopian ancestry. Her parents met at a hospital in Ethiopia while working as medical practitioners. Being an only child, Ruth spent her formative years in rural India. Just when she clocked seven years old, her father died in a car accident. She later relocated to Limerick, Ireland where she spent her youth and then to London, England to gain her secondary school education. Loving (2016)
As earlier shared, Ruth Negga played Mildred Loving in the movie Loving which premiered at Cannes Film Festival and later at Toronto International Film Festival. The film is about a real-life interracial couple in 1950s Virginia whose marriage led to a Supreme Court decision. Richard Loving, a white man, marries his black girlfriend Mildred in Washington, D.C. to avoid Virginia’s anti-interracial marriage laws. They are arrested and sentenced to prison, but their sentence is suspended as long as they leave Virginia for 25 years. They have children together and eventually seek legal help to overturn the anti-miscegenation laws in the Supreme Court.
During the course of the lawsuit, the couple face discrimination after their interracial marriage. Despite opposition and legal battles, they ultimately win their case in the Supreme Court, overturning bans on interracial marriage. The Lovings continue to live together and build their family home, but tragically, Richard dies in a car accident a few years later. Mildred remains unmarried and lives in the home Richard built until her death in 2008. Negga’s performance as Mildred Loving was praised and she received nominations for several awards including the Academy Award for Best Actress, Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and BAFTA Rising Star Award.
